Do you know a little girl who loves to change outfits multiple times throughout the day? While expressing themselves though fashion may be fun for the kiddos, the laundry can start to pile up! Enter the Girl's Fully Reversible Skirt, a free pattern for a simple, twirly skirt that's just as much fun to sew as it is to wear. The comfy elastic waist and choice of two favorite fabrics will make it a wardrobe staple, and the ease of sewing (no pattern pieces! no interfacing! no zippers or buttons!) will make it easy to sew up a whole closet full.

My favorite thing about this skirt is the way it is 100% reversible without the usual piping, binding, or added bands that are typical for reversible patterns. All you need is two different prints, enough elastic to fit comfortably around the child's waist, and an hour or so for cutting and sewing.

Another wonderful thing about this skirt is you can customize it in so many ways. Make it shorter or longer, add fullness, stitch on some applique or pockets, whatever makes you (and the recipient) happy! The sewing is very, very easy, especially once you get the hang of sewing down and around the side seam.

For the fabric for these skirts, we chose two new lines in the shop-- the skirt at left is made from "Double Dutch" by Latifah Saafir for Hoffman Fabrics. Aside from the line having the perfect name, how could we resist an ice cream bar skirt for a little girl?! Not to mention that if (ahem, when) popsicle juice drips onto her outfit and you've still got to get through the grocery store, just flip the skirt over to a clean side. The happy, colorful geometric dots on the reverse side look like something from a retro arcade game.

For the yellow skirt on the right, we used "Supernova' by Rae Ritchie for Dear Stella Fabrics. This line of science-inspired motifs, including these glasses, will appeal to the girl who would rather read books and pair her skirts with high top sneakers (how sweet would this be with a cardigan for school?) The reverse of the skirt is Dear Stella Scallop Dot, which makes for a simple basic perfect for pairing with busy shirts.  A free pattern for a girl's fully reversible skirt from Katie Remski at Pink Castle Fabrics

New Dear Stella Fabric: Winter is Here, Supernova, and More!

Posted by Katie Remski on Jul 10, 2017 11:58:53 AM

We're so happy to have new Dear Stella fabric in the shop! Here's a quick overview of what's new and what's back in stock.

Winter is Here by Dear Stella House Designer manages to be a little medieval and a lot cute all the same time! The stormy gray and white colors are punctuated with a little warm taupe for a palette that's neutral but not boring. This would make a fun baby quilt for any Game of Thrones fans in your life. The Dear Stella basic "Net" print is part of this collection as well!   Winter is Here by Dear Stella

Supernova by Dear Stella Fabrics Supernova by Rae Ritchie will appeal to your inner nerd, with sweet spectacles, pencils, a whimsical laboratory, gemstones, equations, and cats in outer space! This collection has a STUNNING solar system map print that would make a gorgeous background or backing for a simple quilt! Scallop Dots and Triangle Dot basics round out the collection.

A few more of our favorite Rae Ritchie prints from past collections have returned! "Foxtail Forest Treetop Party in Multi", "Trail Mix Canoes in Navy," and "Moon Garden Flying Moths in Night" are just a few of what we call Rae Ritchie MVPs. We've also restocked more Scallop Dot colors (like the yummy "Sorbet" and "Tangerine" colors) to give you a better variety of the Chroma Basics  Foxtail Forest Treetop Party by Rae Ritchie

We <3 Unicorn Fabric!

"Unicorns I love them, unicorns I love them."

--Agnes, Despicable Me

Scientific fact: it's hard to be grouchy while sewing with unicorn fabric. If you're looking to add some magic and fun to your stash, we have the perfect prints for you!

Mini Tossed Unicorns

"Minis Tossed Unicorns in Pink" by Timeless Treasures checks all the boxes for unicorn fabric: rainbows, stars, and pink. The little unicorns are small and sweet and the rainbow-gradient stars seem to almost twinkle.

'Daydream in Light Blue" by Cosmo Textiles has SO MUCH DETAIL! Not only are there sparkly glitter winged pegasus unicorns but glass slippers, ballet pointe shoes, perfume bottles, pearls, candy, swans, and more! photos really can't do this fabric justice.  Daydream in Light Blue

Sketched Unicorns

If you're in the market for some unicorns who are a tad more chill about their mythical status, "Sketched Unicorns in Pink" by TImeless Treasures might be just the thing. Realistically equine and sprinkled with just a few ferns, these unicorns would rather shyly lounge in a field than go flaunting their majesty.

This one is from the princess of unicorn prints herself, Lizzy House! "Whisper Palette Unicorn Dream in Cloud" has unicorns serving as noble steeds for these castle knights, all in the style of medieval illustrations. Wouldn't this make an amazing quilt backing?!  Lovely Hunt Whisper Palette Unicorns

Magical Unicorns in Teal  If a fairytale woods sounds like the perfect setting for a white and blue unicorn, you'll love "Magical Unicorns in Teal" from Timeless Treasures! Sprinkled with hedgehogs, mushrooms, bunnies, and sly foxes, this unicorn is happy to be surrounded by friends and flowers.

Lastly, we have Sarah Watts' "Magic Forest Unicorns in Yellow," appearing at PCF this July! This print from Watts' upcoming Cotton and Steel collection has medium sized unicorns in grown-up but whimsical shades of mustard and peach, and it also comes in a black/gray/hot pink colorway!
