Remember-- if you want to start the club on one of the bundles pictured here, just sign up by the 5th of that month (for example: if you want November's bundle, sign up for the club before November 5th.)

This month's prints come from:

Menagerie, Magic Forest, Black and White 2017, Sleep Tight, Lagoon and Lil Monsters

October

This month is a color story focused on blue and red and the shades in between. Pink, navy, royal, sky, and blush are accented with black and gray in retro inspired prints.

Kicks, Lagoon, Yours Truly, Snap to Grid, Beauty Shop and Sienna

November

The weather may be getting cold, but this bundle is bright and ready to party! Cheerful pops of neon pink dress up black, cream, and aqua, and unicorns bring a dash of whismy to these blenders.

This month's prints come from:

Snap to Grid, Wonderland, Magic Forest, Black and White 2017, Beauty Shop, Sienna and Flower Shop

December

A secret garden in December, the pull for this month is all about happy yellow, fresh greens, and sweet pinks. Bees, squirrels and unicorns anchor a palette that's touched with a little gold to gild the theoretical lily.

This month's prints come from:

Magic Forest, Menagerie, Sienna, Kuijra & Star and Flower Shop

January

It's a jungle out there-- Lagoon leaves, giant fish, and elephants meander among vermillion, turquoise, and bright blue. A little pale pink and neutral sand keeps things from going too crazy, but Beauty Shop's manicured hands will probaby be your favorite thing to fussy cut.

This month's prints come from:

Beauty Shop, Sienna, Lil Monsters, Kicks, Lagoon, Kuijra & Star, Magic Forest and Flower Shop

Cotton and Steel August 2017: Beauty Shop and Menagerie

Beauty Shop Fabric by Cotton + Steel Menagerie by Rifle Paper Co. and Cotton + Steel

Cotton and Steel has two lines arriving at the store this August: Beauty Shop and Menagerie! Let's take a quick look at the two very different, but awesome, collections!

First is Beauty Shop, a collaboration line between Sarah Watts and Melody Miller. The line was inspired by the salons and beauty parlors of yesterday, where ladies would gather just as much to get their hair and nails done as to gossip and gab. We absolutely adore the little strawberry hard candies and sassy cats

This line also includes a panel in two colorways, showcasing retro motifs that are just perfect for quilt squares!

Menagerie by Rifle Paper Co. and Cotton + Steel Second is Menagerie by Rifle Paper Co. As always, the line has beautiful, painterly florals and characters, this time in the form of birds, tigers, giant leaves, and the always a hit rosa flowers. This line inlcudes a digital print, "Watercolor in Multi." Digital printing allows for more colors to make this fabric really dynamic.

Menagerie also includes several substrates, namely lawn, rayon, canvas, and a rayon-lawn blend. The return of "Birch Floral" rayon in a rich eggplant color defintiely makes us happy, and the metallic "Celestial Lawn" is just dreamy! The canvases in this collection are absolute knockouts-- we want every bag, basket, and toss pillow made from tiger (Jungle Canvas in Hunter) or monstera (Monstera Canvas in Natural) prints!

To really show off how amazing this canvas is, we made a Noodlehead Divided Basket-- see the post here!

Noodlehead Divided Basket in Cotton and Steel Menagerie Canvas

Cotton and Steel Menagerie Canvas by Rifle Paper Co You can never have enough storage bins-- it's a scientific fact. The Divided Basket pattern by Anna Graham's Noodlehead Patterns is a soft and flexible bin with a divider panel in the middle to help you organize small items. I knew as soon as I saw the Menagerie Jungle Canvas from Cotton and Steel's latest Rifle Paper Co. collection it had to be a children's book basket. After my success with the Poolside Tote, I couldn't wait to get started!

For the lining, I used Essex Yarn Dyed Linen in the color Seafoam, which is a pale green. The stabilizer is By Annie's Soft and Stable, my go-to for all projects that need structure. I love the smooth, flawless look it gives when layered with canvas-- it's almost like it's one with the fabric. I used 1" cotton webbing for the handles, and Aurifil 50wt thread for all stitching.

I opted for the pocketless version of the basket to best show off the large-scale print without interruption.

Cotton and Steel Menagerie Canvas by Rifle Paper Co
Cotton and Steel Menagerie Canvas by Rifle Paper Co  I sewed the entire basket on the Janome Skyline S7, and I can't even begin to describe how much easier AccuFeed made the process-- at one point, I was sewing through canvas, 2 layers of linen, Soft and Stable, and webbing all at the same time, and the machine hummed along like it was nothing. If your machine doesn't have AccuFeed, definitely use a walking food to help keep all the layers smooth and feeding through the machine at the same rate. Wonder Clips instead of pins are also a big help for holding all layers in place.
The Divided Basket is overall a real cinch to sew, the only complicated part being the divider-- even then, go slowly, read the directions throughly, and have a seam ripper nearby. Once you've sewn in the divider, you understand the construction and the second basket you make (trust me, you'll want dozens) will be even easier. All the instructions are clear and easy to follow, and the steps are very logical. The only part I had trouble with was keeping my topstitching straight, but changing to a 1/4" foot helped immensely.  If you're looking for a soft storage bin pattern, the Divided Basket is a great option. I'd rate the skill level for this pattern as confident beginner-- it's easy at the start and finish, and just challenging enough in the middle to build up your skills. It's really fun to get to work with some substrates like canvas and linen (the pattern works with regular quilting cotton too) and doesn't use a lot of fabric. Wouldn't this make the best gift for a child's birthday, pre-loaded with a few good books?

Happy sewing!

Cotton and Steel July 2017: Kicks, Lagoon, and Magic Forest!

Kicks-- Cotton + Steel Lagoon-- Cotton + Steel Magic Forest-- Cotton + Steel

We're so excited about Cotton and Steel's newest collections from Melody Miller, Rashida Coleman-Hale, and Sarah Watts! Here's a little tour of each line.

Kicks by Melody Miller First up, we have Kicks by Melody Miller. Melody was inspired by a museum exhibit featuring vintage sneakers, and the resulting collection is cool and retro in that classic Melody style. Not only does the collection feature tennis shoes, but athletic socks, whimsical shoelace stripes, and a strikingly geometric dot print.

Next isLagoon by Rashida Coleman-Hale. Lagoon is full of tropical motifs, including lemurs, leaves, feathers, and an amazing map print featuring tiny swimmers and friendly elephants! We also love the blender prints in this line-- "Mini Chimes" in the orchid and cobalt colors are sure to show up in many future projects.  Lagoon by Rashida Coleman-Hale

Magic Forest by Sarah Watts Last but definitely not least is Magic Forest by Sarah Watts. Sarah's collection contains 10 large-ish scale prints of animals ranging from bees to unicorns that manage to be both magical and a little moody just like a real woods. We can't get enough of those swirly tailed squirrels!

Which collection is your favorite? What do you plan to make with these new prints? Tell us in the comments!
