Classes are starting again at Pink Castle!

This post will cater a little more specifically to our local friends but I wanted to share with all of you anyway!

We have a new class coming to our shop (hopefully in our new location) featuring a new teacher! Anke Trampler will be joining us starting later this month for an introductory sewing class in Ann Arbor.

This class will be a six-week long course that will cover the basics of machine sewing including fabric selection, reading and understanding patterns, pressing/pinning, interfacing, zippers, buttonholes, and all those other important steps required for successful sewing projects. It's a really great course covering tons of material!

Anke will walk students through all the steps of the sewing process from prep work to finishing and in the process will help students complete four projects: an infinity scarf, a throw pillow with tassels, and a cute sleep set with lounge pants and an eye mask!

You can save a spot for yourself or a budding sewist in our Modern Sewing Essentials class by clicking here under "General Sewing".

Feel free to share our flyer for the class too, if you know of some folks who may be interested in trying their hand at sewing!

Finishing Touches - Binding and More!

You've mastered creating your quilt top but what next? This class will mostly cover double-fold binding techniques including how to have a perfect join at the end of the binding and how to create lovely mitered corners. Cut your binding time easily by 1/5 by learning how to entirely machine sew your binding. Learn a machine binding technique with a flange that mimics piping. We will cover how to make bias binding as well as straight on-the-grain binding and why you would choose either. We will also discuss ideas for backing your quilt and how to make a pieced backing and how to create that perfect quilt label.

Using a quilt sandwich (a pillow sized "fake" quilt), you will learn the basic techniques and then have a sample to look at once you get home. There should be plenty of class time for discussion and for you to get started on one of your own quilts as well.  There is more information on what to bring on the class info page.

Prerequisites: While a basic class, this class assumes that the student has made at least one quilt top of any size and understands the concepts of 1/4" seams.

Debbie's tree skirt is make with Robert Kaufman's Kona solids in White and Medium Gray, but it would also look amazing in brighter colors, or even prints (perhaps those great snowflakes or the mistletoe from In from the Cold?). You can read Debbie's blog post about the pattern here.

Students should be able to sew a straight stitch on their sewing machines. Be sure to check the supply list to know what you need to bring!

Price per student is just $49, and the pattern is included in the price of the class.
