QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge!

Posted by Brenda Ratliff on Aug 15, 2014 1:43:00 PM

Did you guys know that our brick and mortar shop hosts the Ann Arbor Modern Quilt Guild? We love our local MQG members and had a blast at QuiltCon in 2013. When all of these modern quilters come together, they seem to do some pretty cool things.

For instance, The Modern Quilt Guild hosts a charity challenge. Some of you may have participated in the challenge for QuiltCon in 2013 but this year they're changing it up a bit!

This year, Modern Quilt Guild chapters will work collaboratively to create completed quilts (pieced, quilted, bound) using a color palette and alternate grid work design, determined by the MQG. Leaders of MQG chapters will be responsible for signing their guilds up by September 30.

After the quilts are finished and displayed at QuiltCon, guilds will be asked to donate their finished projects to local children's shelters. In addition to the gratification of making gorgeous quilts for deserving charities, a few lucky guilds will be featured in a post about the challenge on The Modern Quilt Guild blog next spring!

So what colors will challengers be working with? The Modern Quilt Guild is listing this year's colors as: white, light grey, chartreuse, burnt orange, sky blue, cerise, and deep turquoise.

Solid Bundle

We were lucky enough to be asked to build bundles around this gorgeous color scheme! We've put together bundles of solids (half yard, fat quarter, fat eighth) and blenders (half yard, fat quarter, fat eighth).

Cat Fabric Round-Up

Posted by Brenda Ratliff on Jun 18, 2014 2:41:00 PM

It's no secret that I love cats, and I know I'm not alone. With recent lines by Aneela Hoey, Lizzy House and Alyssa Thomas, cat fabrics are easy to find. That makes me happy.
Emmmylizzy made a crazy cat lady bundle, which is full of awesome fabrics!

I am also crazy for this Kokka print.

Hmm, maybe I need to make a second cat quilt!

Planning Projects for a Retreat

Posted by Brenda Ratliff on Jun 4, 2014 10:56:00 AM

As you may know, there's another Camp Stitchalot this weekend! I wish I could attend, as I know it will be lots of fun.

I thought it might be fun to talk about the types of projects that you might pack for a weekend retreat.

I'm currently working on some English Paper Piecing, and this would be a great, portable project for Camp. If you'd like to start your own EPP project, just make sure you pack a pile of scraps (or maybe a Fat-Eighth Bundle, some paper pieces, small scissors, a needle and thread. That's all you'll need!
Embroidery would be another great idea!

It's always nice to feel like you finish something when you're on a retreat. So pick a WIP that you are nearly done with, or maybe something you've been avoiding (picking out stitches, binding, HST trimming) that you can do that as you chat with your friends. The task you're dreading will probably fly by when you're in good company!

Something New

It's likely that you will feel inspired to start something new, and I say give in to that desire! It's nice to have a new project already cut before you arrive so you can quickly piece it together (or at least start).

Something challenging

You may have a project that is challenging you, and bringing it to a room full of sewists is a smart idea. You can probably find some assistance from one of your fellow campers!

I like to bring at least three projects to a weekend retreat. It's important to have options, and also, you might be surprised at your productivity level!

In case you're interested, there are two more Camp Stitchalot sessions planned for later this year: Fall 2014 and Winter 2014!

What You Sew: Flickr Round-Up

Posted by Brenda Ratliff on May 28, 2014 4:55:00 PM

Hello! I'm just dropping in to share a few fun things from the Pink Castle Fabrics flickr pool. Be sure to add the projects you sew with your PCF stash to the pool, and we might feature you!
First up, I love this table runner, made by Kelly. She used a Word Up bundle (currently sold out, but I bet Brenda would make a new one, if you ask nicely!). Or, you could use this new bundle! The 32 Rainbow Way bundle would be a great choice for the brights. You could use the same bundles to make a pillow like this one from Pretty Bobbins:

You can read more about her pillow here.

And finally, look at this adorable oven mitt, made by Lucy. She used this Lecien Yummy Lunchtime print. You can read more about the oven mitt here! I think I might need to make one, too!
