When it comes to sewing machines, a few of our most frequently heard requests are for affordable, simple machines that work just as well at home as they do for travel. Meet the Janome 3160QDC-B, an all-purpose workhorse that wants to sew with you everyday and in every place.
The 3160 has some of our absolute must-have features, such as the automatic thread cutter, start/stop button, needle threader, needle up/needle down button, and even has a removable extension table to help you manage big quilts. The easy to read LCD screen has simple arrow buttons to let you select any of the 60 stitches and automatically sets the appropriate stitch length and tension, and even tells you which presser foot to use! The speed adjustment slider lets you decide if you’d like to sail through your projects as fast as possible or slow things down to a leisurely pace. Threading this machine couldn’t be easier: just follow the numbered arrows.
This machine is a great option for those searching for a good everyday sewing machine in the $500–$600 range, coming in at $549. It’s also weighed at just over 12 lbs, making it light enough to comfortably tote around to classes and retreats (or to stow away on a shelf at the end of the day if you don’t have enough space for a designated sewing area.) The slip over hard case is great for protecting the machine from dust and scratches, though you may wish for a carrying tote or case for travel. This machine also includes the bonus of a quilting kit, including a walking foot, so you can easily quilt small projects at home.
The 3160 is a good machine for a variety of projects, including quilts, apparel, and bags/home decor. While we found the machine could confidently tackle 6 layers of denim, if you plan on exclusively or mostly sewing with very dense or difficult materials (such as outdoor canvas) you may want to try the heavy-duty specialized Janome HD3000 or 1600p instead. For apparel sewing, the 3160 has a few very helpful features, including an over edge foot (for overlocking raw edges) and a 1-step buttonhole. A zipper foot, quarter inch foot, and stitch-in-the-ditch foot are all also included. I also must add the teal accent color on this machine looks so nice sitting on my sewing table!
