When we first heard last spring that textile designers Melody Miller, Rashida Coleman-Hale, Sarah Watts, Alexia Abegg, and Kim Kight were leaving behind their iconic Cotton+Steel brand, we anxiously awaited their next creative move. That move turned out to be a fresh, fun new label, Ruby Star Society for Moda Fabrics!
Similarly to Cotton+Steel, Ruby Star Society will feature unique fabric lines (including basics and panels) from each designer that work in projects independently as well as together. These new collections are printed on a special substrate, Ruby Star Cotton, which is a lightweight quilting cotton with an ultra soft touch and vibrant dye quality– you can use it for both quilts and apparel!
Let’s take a closer look at each of the Summer 2019 collections.
First up is Alma and Add it Up by Alexia Abegg. Alexia brings her signature hand printing techniques to these collections, using hand-carved blocks, paintbrushes, and pencils to draw her motifs. Alma features earthy colors and nature inspired images, including butterflies, blocks, and the gorgeous line-drawn “She” print celebrating sisterhood.
Add it Up is a returning basic, with its tiny “+” print in a new color palette. We were SO excited to see this one come back– it’s so versatile and works in almost every project.
Alma and Add it Up arrive in August 2019.
Next is Crescent and Brushed by Sarah Watts. Crescent celebrates the night owl, with nocturnal critters (and mythical creatures) in a twilight colored palette. Crescent features a fun panel with vintage sewing machines, and has a giant 108″ panel so you can make a Magic Unicorn Duvet cover and pillows!
Brushed, the basics collection to coordinate with Crescent, is a small collection with a subtle tone-on-tone grunge-esque brushstroke print. The metallics will add a touch of sparkle to any project!
Crescent and Brushed arrive in August 2019.
Social and Spark by Melody Miller is bursting with life and color! Rainbows, telephones, chirpy birds, ice cream cones, and glimmering gold accents make this collection joyful and sweet. Soft serve ice cream print fabric from the queen of retro illustration– need we say more?
Spark, Melody’s new basic, has a light sprinkling of asterisks that add just a twinkle of print to projects. Featuring a neon pink and a gold sparkle print, Spark is one of our favorite new basics.
Social and Spark arrive in July 2019.
Pop! and Zip by Rashida Coleman-Hale brings the fun of a day at the fair to life on fabric! Balloon animals, records, old fashioned soda bottles, and colorful stars make for a bright and happy collection. We can only imagine the fussy cutting opportunities this collection brings!
Zip is Rashida’s new basic, bringing everyone’s favorite irregular stripe from her Zephyr collection back in a rainbow of candy colors. It will make such beautiful quilt bindings!
Pop! and Zip arrive in July 2019.
Lastly, we have Anagram and Grid by Kimberly Kight. The team’s resident 80’s fangirl, Kim’s Anagram collection is a beautiful and nostalgic homage to the whimsy and quirky style of the 1980s. A modern, muted color palette keeps things from getting too crazy, and lots of creamy low volume fabrics are perfect for quilts.
The tidy, geometric Grid basic is a return of the popular print from Kim’s Snap to Grid collection, and with colors like hot pink, caramel, and navy, it will become a stash staple.
Anagram and Grid arrive in July 2019.
